Harmful Dichotomies: Creating a Separation Between Political Elites and Education through Media Coverage

Abstract Details

2017, Bachelor of Science of Journalism (BSJ), Ohio University, Journalism.
One point four percent, the amount of coverage education received in the national media for 2009. This research set out to establish what findings already existed within research done on the media coverage of education. With a general consensus seen in the media that the American education system is in a crisis, the need to understand how researchers are examining the issue is crucial. Previous research illustrates what has already been explored, and highlights where gaps exist. These gaps show the problems found within the media coverage of education and forms more questions to use for future research. This research found that the media coverage of education creates a harmful tension between the act of learning and the education system controlled by policy. This happens from the source selection used in the coverage. With this information gathered, more research can occur to gain more insights and guide decisions about education policy and media coverage in the future.
