TEAM CHARTERS AND PERFORMANCE. THE IMPACT OF EARLY PLANNING MECHANISMS ON TEAM PROCESSES AND PERFORMANCE.

Team charters are a type of early planning mechanism commonly used by teams in organizations around the world. Their use hinges on the belief that completing team charters helps team members to align on goals and performance expectations and thus set teams up to be as successful as possible. However, there is little research that confirms the purported benefits of team charters, or examines the means by which team charters influence team performance. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate whether team charters quality influences team processes (i.e., team planning and action processes) and, ultimately, team performance. The study hypotheses are tested using an undergraduate student sample consisting of 78 student teams. The results of this study indicate that team charters exhibit a significant, positive relationship with team transition and action processes, both of which exhibit a significant, positive relationship with team performance. The findings also indicate that an indirect relationship exists between team charters and team performance.
