Media Ethics and Violence Against the Transgender Community: An Exploration of Ethically Covering Homicides of Black Transgender Women

Abstract Details

2019, Bachelor of Science of Journalism (BSJ), Ohio University, Journalism.
With the increasing rate of known homicides of transgender women of color, news media need to be more careful in their coverage of these women. This case study seeks to evaluate whether news media ethically covered the homicides of three black transgender women murdered in Louisiana within eight days of one another in February 2017. Chyna Gibson, Ciara McElveen, and Jaquarrius Holland were three of the seven transgender women who were murdered within the first two months of 2017. These three women were chosen for this case study because they were from cities close to one another in Louisiana. Nearly half the transgender women murdered in that same time period were black transwomen from the same state and within such a short period of time. While the rest of the homicides occurred all over the country and across longer time periods, Gibson and McElveen were killed within forty-eight hours in the same city of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Holland was murdered within eight days in a nearby Louisiana city, Monroe.
