Intercepting Injection: A Graphic Novel About Female Fracktivism in Athens County

Abstract Details

2020, Bachelor of Arts (BA), Ohio University, Geography.
The rise of injection wells in Athens County has been met with fierce resistance by local activists concerned with the environmental and human health effects of pumping fracking waste underneath their feet. The resistance is predominantly led by women, motivated by an identity as protectors and mothers. Information about their struggle and the environmental implications of natural gas production is hard to come by in a political and social economy dominated by corporate control and propaganda. Grassroots education must fill the void to give citizens their right to understand what is being done to their land and dissent if they so please. This goal of this research is to provide an engaging and accessible piece of community storytelling to educate a wide audience of Athens County residents impacted by injection wells in their county. Acting as a piece of comics activism, this graphic novel tells the story of three women spearheading resistance efforts in their pockets of the county, employing various organizing strategies.
