Life, Food, and Appalachia

Abstract Details

2021, Bachelor of Arts (BA), Ohio University, Sociology.
Throughout history, food has repeatedly been the center of family, culture, health, and community. Recognizing the significance of food, this study presents findings on Appalachian culture and history through the lens of food and recipes. As a diverse region, Appalachia is home to many culturally relevant foodways and traditions that may shape identity and communities throughout the region. The research findings stem from a project using interviews and the collection of recipes from 23 participants living in the region to create a cookbook/storybook looking at food in Appalachia through a sociological lens. The book of recipes and related personal stories reflects the importance of cultural preservation and foodways in many Appalachian families and communities. The study argues the value of community and gathering around food in the Appalachian region and presents common themes amongst participant food stories or recipes including the value of homegrown food, gender roles in food preparation, and food as cultural preservation.
