Abstract
This thesis examines the educational and formation of professional governesses. The advice manuals and woman's journals highlight the network of governesses and supportive community members created to discuss the issues surrounding governesses. The thesis explores the professionalization of governesses within the context of the VIctorian ideal of womanhood, the movement for woman's education, the education reform in England, and within the context of public and private spheres of influence. Governesses took part in new educational classes at institutions founded for governesses or woman, they created professional societies, and published their ideas on classroom education and education methodology. Ultimately, governesses never achieve full recognition as professionals because of the creation and reform of public schools in England.
