Abstract Details

2011, Master of Education, University of Toledo, Curriculum and Instruction.
The purpose of this study was to explore the science reading preferences of students and to examine their reasons for selecting science trade books. 21 science trade books available from a local public library that were deemed appropriate for students in elementary and intermediate grade levels by the Outstanding Science Trade Books List in the content areas of Earth and space science, life science, and physical science were evaluated using a comprehensive rubric. Semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with 17 volunteer participants at a science museum. Participants ranged from grades three through eight. Students were asked pre-browsing and post-browsing questions as they made their science trade book selections. Students were asked to supply reasoning for their answers to the questions. Results indicated that elementary grade level students were preoccupied with the aesthetic features during the book selections. Elementary grade level students were less focused than intermediate grade level students on the content of the science trade books and relied more heavily on the illustrations to make their book selections. When making science trade book selections, intermediate grade level students attended to a wider variety of factors than elementary grade level students and exhibited stronger preferences for examining the content and level of difficulty of the science trade books. These findings suggest that cognitive and developmental ability play a role when student select to read science trade books.
