Abstract
Previous research has generally supported a relationship between type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and depression; however, the characteristics of this relationship are unclear. A majority of available research indicates that there is an association between T2DM and depression but has not been able to definitively state the nature of this relationship (i.e. causal or correlational). The current study uses a behavioral intervention to target diabetes-specific behaviors using immediate contingent reinforcement through an assisted self-management monitoring device over a period of 12 months. In an attempt to build on previous research, the current study uses a robust statistical approach, latent growth curve modeling, which makes it possible to examine changes and directionality of change in depressive symptoms and glycated hemoglobin. Results indicated that changes in depressive symptoms were non-significant suggesting the ASMM did not decrease depressive symptoms over time. All other results were not interpretable as the growth curve models did not fit the data well. Considering less than adequate model fit, results suggested that patients who used the ASMM over 12 months evidenced a decrease in HbA1c. There was also no evidence for a temporal relationship between T2DM and depression. Further interventions focusing on treating symptoms of T2DM and depression need to be explored in order for patients with both diagnoses to have optimal treatment outcomes.
