Abstract
The study investigates travel behavior of the UT Main campus community. It focuses on walking and bicycling as sustainable transportation modes. It identifies the significant factors that inspire people to use active transportation. The study reviews relevant papers and articles to get an idea of the topic. The result of the study slightly differs from the other researches. It aims to promote active transportation on college campus to make it environment friendly. The researcher performs descriptive analysis, multinomial logistic regression model and geospatial analysis to fulfill the objectives of the study. Travel distance, gender, academic status, status of the residence, perception of safety, car ownership, and weather are four major factors that affect mode choice decisions of the students, faculty and staff to the campus. Age, gender, income, perception of safety, academic status (faculty and staff), status of the residence, number of weekly trips, weather, and semester are major responsible factors for walking and bicycling on the UT Main campus. Considering the results, the researcher suggests the campus planners to take proper steps for promoting sustainable transportation modes on the campus. She recommends improving walkways and bike lanes to inspire people for active commuting to/on the campus. Furthermore, the study explores that many respondents feel unsafe on campus at night. The author recommends providing better lighting system and more police patrol at night to increase the number of bicyclists and pedestrian to/on campus. Above all, it contributes to create a pollution-free and healthy urban college campus in Toledo, Ohio.
