Regulatory Fit of Social Comparison Information: Similarity versus Dissimilarity to Health Role Models

Research suggests that efforts to promote health behavior change can be improved by engaging in social comparisons. But which is more motivating: chasing a positive role model or avoiding a negative one? The current research predicted that the answer lies in the complex interplay between how a role model is perceived in relation to oneself (e.g., perceived similarity or dissimilarity) and a whether a person’s regulatory orientation (striving for positive outcomes or avoiding negative outcomes) matches the comparison direction (upward or downward). This was tested by manipulating regulatory focus and perceived similarity before giving participants a sleep-related health survey supposedly completed by another student. Participants’ behavioral intentions and motivation to improve their sleeping habits were then measured. Results did not find support for the relationship between social comparison direction, regulatory focus, and similarity. Explanations for the findings and implications for future directions are discussed.
