Exact BER Calculation of TCM-MAPSK using Pairwise Probability of Product Trellis Algorithm for DVB Applications

This thesis is on the exact bit error rate (BER) calculation of TCM (Trellis Coded Modulation) M-ary APSKs applicable to the DVB for broadband multimedia data transmission. The DVB-S2 and S2x standards utilizes the combination of LDPC + BCH FEC coding with QPSK, 8PSK, M-APSK (M is 8 to 256) modulation schemes. However this concatenated coding schemes and modulation processes can be effectively combined into a single process using TCM. Especially for M=4 and 8, the proposed MAPSK combined with pragmatic TCM can yield better performance than MPSK under both AWGN and fading channel. Although DVB standards specify the respective coding gain and average BER per respective coded modulation schemes of interest, currently no closed forms for the exact BER calculation can be found. This work aims to utilize the product trellis algorithm for analytically deriving the exact BER of TCM-MAPSK with a proposed unique signal mapping based on the set partitioning for TCM-MAPSKs , (M=8, 16, 32, and 64). The proposed analyses and results assume the practical limitation on maximum transmit power for all TCM M-APSK modulation scheme considered. The simulation results confirm the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with the error performance of the uncoded modulation schemes.
