Abstract
As the smart grid enables and deploys a wide variety of innovative technologies, more and more existing and emerging business functions are becoming stakeholders in smart grids. The home area network (HAN) is a prime example of these new technologies and functions that need to be supported. Compared to the conventional home area network (HAN), the HAN in a smart grid environment features a higher level of innovative technologies and larger amounts of data, which demands a comprehensive approach to securing its data transmission and communications. The new technologies of HAN are evolving fast, and people are willing to apply these technologies in their houses in order to enjoy better intelligence and convenience. Smart home is invented in this situation. It provides high-quality services to the users by deploying smart devices in the home area network (HAN), through which the Smart Grid is connected with the consumers. ZigBee is the most popular network protocol used in the HAN thus far, which is a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols used to create personal area networks built from small, low power digital radios. The smart home consists of advanced computers, embedded systems and the network communication media. A variety of electronic devices such as lighting system, air-conditioning system, security system and network appliances are connected together via a home network. Home Area Network (HAN) is the end point of the Smart Grid and the connection between the customers and the Smart Grid. Its communication and information security is really important. As Smart Grid becomes more and more advanced, most of the cyberattacks focus on the HAN. Therefore, the IDS can be considered as an effective solution to the security in the HAN. This dissertation is focused on both the design and implementation of HANSim and an IDS on it. Contributions of this dissertation includes creating a security model for information flow in the HAN, creating and implementing the HANSim security testbed, and design the IDS on the HANSim. HANSim is designed to feature cost-effectiveness and user-friendliness. It enables users to specify the HAN network topology, communication protocols and home appliances. For the evaluation purpose, four representative attacks were implemented on the testbed and their effectiveness was studied using the developed testbed. An IDS framework is designed for the attacks in the HANSim. The IDS design method based on the time series analysis is chosen to be used to design the IDS in the HANSim. Based on this method, the IDS rule sets for each attack simulated in the HANSim are created. These attack behaviors are considered the pre-defined attacks to be recorded by the IDS. Some security policies in the HAN behaviors modeling and two security mechanisms are also created for the HAN security in order to make the IDS to be more powerful.
