Characteristics of an Optical Communication Link for Mars Utilizing a Modulated Retro-Reflector

Abstract Details

2017, Master of Science, University of Toledo, Electrical Engineering.
Proposed is a detailed link budget analysis for a planetary orbiter-to-surface-to-orbiter free-space laser communication system. The link budget utilizes a modulated retro-reflector (MRR), enabling the ability to save power and have a two-way communication link between the orbiter and surface unit. This two-way communication is created by a nested pulse position modulation (PPM) scheme due to the fact that the system requires modulating an already modulated beam. To prove this scheme, simulations and an experiment will be demonstrated that the link will experience. The data rates are compared to the state of practice Electra radio that is on the Mars Curiosity rover to show the improved abilities that this enabling system creates.
