A Case Study on Leadership Members in a Teacher Activist Group: “The Fight For Public Education is a Fight For Democracy”

This qualitative case study focused on the social media-based teacher activist group, The Badass Teachers’ Association. The purpose of the study was to highlight what leadership and organizational characteristics leaders of the organization saw as crucial for accomplishing the organization’s goals of social justice and democratic education. To frame this study, the researcher drew upon the fields of democratic education and social movement theory. In drawing out the connections from these bodies of literature, the study speaks to the sense of identity that is within and also created by the organization, the shifts within the group, the types of activism utilized by the organization, the growth of the organization, and the effort to strive for democratic education in a time where democracy is threatened by neoliberalism.
