The Impact of College Attributes on the Earnings of Community College Graduates

Abstract Details

2017, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Toledo, Higher Education.
Renewed attention to quality in higher education in all sectors, particularly since the 2007-2009 Great Recession, has raised interest in the value of education. While research associating the quality of education and institutional attributes with graduate earning potentials has been conducted among four-year higher education institutions, fewer studies have focused on earning potentials of community college degree/certificate earners. This study investigated the relationship between college attributes, including fixed institutional, college compositional, field of study, and financial characteristics, and the earnings of graduates from public two-year community colleges in the U.S. Of 53 variables studied, 12 had a significant impact on earnings among community college graduates, including percentage of students who complete within two years, net tuition, and share of students who receive either a Pell Grant or a federal loan. Changing demographics of community college students, the increased cost of a community college education, and the need for increased support for two-year degrees/certifications will continue to be a challenge to the overall mission of community colleges. The decline of earnings of community college graduates over the period of this study will continue the discussion on whether a college education remains a good investment.
