Abstract Details

2018, Doctor of Philosophy, University of Toledo, Higher Education.
Despite efforts to increase diversity in the nursing workforce, the number of diverse nursing graduates, particularly those from outside of the United States remain low, and attrition rates high. This qualitative study using a phenomenological method sought to identify the shared experience of twelve international nursing students whom successfully transitioned to their senior year of a baccalaureate nursing program or recently graduated, identifying key components of self, situation, support and the strategies used to face transitions. Participants representing nine countries were interviewed with a semi-structured interview guide created using the theoretical lenses of Schlossberg’s Adult Transition Theory and elements of Tinto’s Theory of Individual Departure to develop interview questions. After analysis of data, nine themes emerged that were a culmination of barriers, facilitators and transitions. These themes included prejudice; financial barriers; day-to-day communication issues; transitions to the US education system and the nursing program; transition to the US medical system and the role of the nurse; nursing as a second choice major; clinical experience as a facilitator; and overcoming personal hardships. Armed with this information, counselors, faculty, and administrators can plan programs and support services that will assist these students through these transitions. Recommendations for policy and practice are provided.
