Teaching ESL to Syrian Refugees: Problems and Challenges

Abstract Details

, Master of Arts, University of Toledo, English (as a Second Language).
Refugees resettling in a new country face a lot of challenges to adapt to the new culture and language, which will help them find jobs and stability in their new home. Since most refugees’ resettled in the USA usually do not speak English, it becomes their first priority to learn it. Refugees seek learning English in different academic and no-academic centers, which mostly depend on volunteers to teach English. Also, a lot of refugee resettlement agencies offer English evening classes. In these classes, refugees encounter a lot of challenges like their inability to attend classes because of long work hours, lack of volunteers who are bilingual in Arabic and English, and limited resources in the classroom. This study also suggests solutions to make sure those refugees are learning English. The results show that all refugees miss English classes due to their busy work schedule, and stress of being in an education setting, and stress of being in a new country. The study suggests that refugees can be enrolled in vocational schools, where they can establish their career and learn English at the same time besides the involvement of community colleges, which would help them in learning English. Also, recruiting ESL teachers who speak Arabic and English would be helpful to the students in the class.
