Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, University of Toledo, English (as a Second Language).
An Abstract of Mental Imagery as a Substitute for Parallel Sensory Input by Claire Ann MacBride Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in English Specialization in English as a Second Language The University of Toledo May 2018 Our world is more connected than ever before, and the importance of learning and teaching multiple languages will only continue to increase. In the United States alone, the number of English language learners has drastically increased in recent years. “Nationwide, the number of school aged English learners (ELs) is growing rapidly. According to the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition (2010), between the 1997–1998 and 2008–2009 school years, this segment of the school-aged population increased by 51% (As cited in Greenfader and Brouillette, 2013, p. 172). In light of this information, researchers and educators must find and implement the best ways of teaching target languages. The way to find effectiveness of methods is through scientific research and analyzing data. The following study was conducted at the University of Toledo. The data was collected between the Fall of 2015 and Spring of 2016 under the direction of Dr. Douglas W. Coleman. This research is a replication study, approved by the Institutional Review Board. This study aimed to find out whether mental imagery can replace parallel sensory input in language learning. Statistical analysis was used. The limitations of this study, and implications for future research are suggested and explained.
