Investigation of Linkage Factors Affecting Code-switching in Arabic-English Speakers

Mustafa Ali, Duaa Mohamed

Abstract Details

2018, Master of Arts, University of Toledo, English (as a Second Language).
The purpose of this study is to investigate the properties within a linkage that lead to code-switching among bilingual speakers using the Hard Science Linguistics theory. The properties include the participants, role parts, props, prop parts, channels, channel parts, settings, and setting parts found within a linkage. It also aims to help clarify the misunderstanding that language is real, and meaning is found in words rather than the surrounding aspects of the communication. Distinguishing the difference between the abstract features of language and the real features of people communicating is important in understanding the how and why of code-switching. The individuals observed in this study are bilingual English and Arabic speakers of varying ages and gender, with an emphasized focus on adults. Naturalistic observations took place in the meat department and cashier checkout line of a Middle Eastern market in Toledo, Ohio.
