Abstract
The current study is a replication of Greg Wheeler’s 2009 study entitled, “Plagiarism in the Japanese universities: Truly a cultural matter?” The current study uses his materials in an ESL context at the University of Toledo and focused on how students reacted when confronted with plagiarism. These results were then compared to Wheeler’s study. The current study examined results of a study of 40 ESL participants from the University of Toledo. Data was gathered through a survey distributed in ESL Composition I classes. The survey contained three one-paragraph essays, all fabricated by Wheeler. Students were given information that two authors were students submitting work for a class, and one author was from a published source. Students scored the essays (1-10) and gave comments on why they gave their score. These scores were then averaged and comments were used to determine how students felt about plagiarism. Limitations in the sample pool led to some inconclusive results; however, one notable result was that the majority of survey participants were unable to detect that plagiarism had occurred. The majority of participants focused on content, grammar, and sentence structure, but when plagiarism was detected, it was similar to the results of Wheeler’s study.
