IMPLEMENTATION AND UTILIZATION OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY WITHIN A DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE LEARNING CONTEXT: ONE SCHOOL'S EXPERIENCE

NOGA, JANICE ELAINE

Abstract Details

2001, MEd, University of Cincinnati, Education : Curriculum and Instruction.
Teacher attitudes and perceptions were examined with respect to the utilization of computer technology within the context of developmentally appropriate practices in the classroom, the manner in which computers can be used to promote specific learning goals found in developmentally appropriate programs, and the barriers and facilitators encountered during the first year of implementation. Teachers' descriptions of organizational barriers to effective integration of computers into their classrooms were examined to gain insight into teachers' alignment and affiliation with district goals and objectives concerning computer technology, an important consideration for successful change. Results suggest that computer technology does have a role in developmentally appropriate learning environments. They also indicate that teacher resistance or reluctance to use computers was not an issue in adoption of computers. The primary barriers to successful integration were inadequate equipment, lack of money for upgrades and maintenance, and lack of technical support when problems arose. However, teacher alignment with district implementation and training plans also played an important role. An attitude of distrust and cynicism among teachers with respect to the district's commitment to support technology adoption in schools suggest that teachers' lack of affiliation with district goals for technology may have deeper roots than just differences of opinion about the need for training and on-site technical support. Resentment at the treatment the school had received in previous years often surfaced during interviews and can be assumed to be a contributing factor to teachers' dissatisfaction with district-based initiatives and supports for technology.
