Carbonate buildups are a common facies in Middle and Late Paleozoic shelf and slope deposits worldwide. This facies, in general, has been the focus of numerous studies because buildups, as reef analogues, can provide a wealth of paleoenvironmental, paleobiological, and sedimentological information. Additionally, since carbonate buildups often serve as traps for petroleum, understanding their temporal and spatial distribution as well as the dynamics associated with their deposition can be an economically relevant endeavor. This study focuses on refining the description and classification of a series of Lower Mississippian buildups in the Fort Payne Formation of southern Kentucky. Sequence stratigraphic concepts are used to define major bounding surfaces that define genetically related packages of rock. New evidence gained through sedimentological and paleontological investigations invalidates previous interpretations of the buildups as debris flows. Additional paleontological findings include a faunal zonation in the buildup core, as revealed through multivariate statistical analysis, which offers heretofore-unavailable insight into faunal communities in carbonate buildups. Petrographic analysis delineates a basic framework for the diagenetic history of the buildups, and enables the recognition of two types of syn-sedimentary cavities, which are pervasive in the buildup core. The cavities recognized are very similar to those known from other buildup occurrences from this time period. Additional similarities between these and other buildups are explored in a literature review, and the rudiments of a unified classification scheme for all Mississippian buildups is developed.
