CALIBRATION OF FRESIM FOR WORK ZONES USING FIELD OBSERVABLE PARAMETERS

SHOAIB, LUBNA

Abstract Details

2002, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering : Civil Engineering.
FRESIM is a well-known microscopic, time-stepping, stochastic simulation model for freeway corridor traffic operations and incident detection. Literature indicates that calibration is the main deterrent against the use of simulation models. The objective of this research was to calibrate FRESIM for work zone conditions using only field observable parameters. Identifying the macroscopic parameters that can easily be collected in the field either by observation or by using detectors, and limiting the calibration process only to these parameters could greatly enhance and simplify the applicability of FRESIM for work zone conditions. The site selected for this case study was a 11.2 mile freeway section located on I-75 in Shelby County, Ohio. A traffic surveillance system developed at the University of Cincinnati in a previous study, provided the necessary traffic flow and occupancy data for this study location. The effectiveness of the selected parameter values in replicating the field traffic operations was verified by comparing the FRESIM point processing occupancy output against field observed occupancy data for the same time period. The calibration parameters were validated by using another set of field data for the same study location. Statistical analysis of the validation results indicated that all the parameter values determined in the calibration process were acceptable at 95% confidence level. The results of this calibration were found to be satisfactory and acceptable for work zone conditions.
