A DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS BASED APPROACH FOR OPTIMAL INSPECTION OF CIRCULARITY TOLERANCE

In the wake of growing importance for quality and the need to reduce inspection costs simultaneously, the need for a scientific method of selecting an optimum inspection strategy for CMM based inspection has become very important. The inspection error resulting from CMM inspection is greatly affected by the profile irregularities and the sampling strategy, which includes sample size, sampling methods and algorithms used for form evaluation. The objective of this work is to devise a system that can recommend an optimal inspection plan based on the needs of the user. A design of experiment-based approach is used to relate inspection error with sampling strategies. Surface irregularities are included in the form of lobes formed on the profile. A new two-way model is proposed that woks both forward and backward between sampling strategy and performance metrics. Results indicate that the number of lobes has little impact on the inspection error while sample size and form evaluation algorithms have significant influence on it. The sampling methods considered do not have any direct impact on the inspection error. Finally, a MATLAB code is developed based on the relationships between the performance metrics and sampling strategies. This works as a user interface that takes inputs from the user and suggests optimum sampling plan based on it.
