LIVING WITH MEMORY

GALVIN, ELIZABETH ANNE

Abstract Details

2003, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning : Architecture.
Collective memories are innately tied to the physical place of the society in which they are created, and their lifespan depends on the vitality of that society. Due to the relocation of individuals from one neighborhood to another, discontinuities exist in the process of creating and maintaining collective memories. The elderly, who are often forced to relocate to homes which accommodate their growing physical limitations, experience these discontinuities as a loss of their memories. Accessible residential developments sited within existing communities and designed to be sensitive to the memory-needs of its users through incorporation of the principles of organization, differentiation and meaning can counter the dissolution of memories. Following extensive interviews with elderly from a chosen target population, a storage wall is proposed as one method of organization that allows the users to give differentiation to their environment by installing their own meaning within it.
