REVISITING THE MALL

Abstract Details

2003, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning : Architecture.
The shopping mall's failure has been a gradual process involving the increased introduction of the automobile, the continual growth of the suburbs, and the gradual removal of civic services and public space from the programs of shopping centers. The mall typology removed the "spectacle" that used to unite the city, movement systems and the spaces of shopping, and relocated the spectacle inward, thereby displacing what used to be an important urban event. This thesis investigates a method by which the revitalization of the mall can occur through spatial organization, revised program, and blurred urban edge conditions. By providing guidelines instead of dictating a formal language, a formula is developed so that the malls can be reworked into the local community. An example of the guidelines and re-development concepts for malls in need of revitalization is demonstrated through a specific case study of the Kingsdale Shopping Center in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
