UNION OF MIND AND BODY: A PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH TO AUGMENT THE HUMAN SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

HARRIS, BROOKE PRESTON

Abstract Details

2003, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning : Architecture.
The human body has played a significant role in the creation of architecture’s proportioning systems, formal compositions, and iconography throughout history; an anthropomorphic means of expression. Philosophical debate concerning the mind-body connection has changed in recent history to suggest a union of mind and body, discrediting the long-held notion of mind and body as two distinct entities. In light of this current approach of mind-body unity, this thesis questions the anthropomorphic means of expression as a sufficient basis of architectural creation and suggests that when creating architecture for human beings to dwell, it is more appropriate to create spaces for the human to experience, rather than to create forms from the human body.
