Abstract
Familiar, oft-encountered objects can easily be taken for granted because humans are handicapped not by two idle eyes and frigid bodies, but rather by a brain that filters sensual perceptions and places the most attention on unfamiliar objects. When an object becomes so familiar that it is overlooked, its ability to affect or engage the human being is undermined. Familiar, ineffectual objects need to be re-presented. As regards architecture, objects are the materials and products used in a building's construction. The frequency with which a human encounters these materials makes them easy for the human to ignore, thereby rendering the familiar materials impotent. One such familiar product, the concrete masonry unit, is often ignored and is therefore powerless to encourage much questioning or discovery. The concrete masonry unit is re-presented in a project for a small, movie-palace adjacent to the Masonic Temple in Cincinnati.
