Abstract Details

2003, MA, University of Cincinnati, Allied Health Sciences : Communication Sciences and Disorders.
Objective: This thesis investigated the effects of prior exposure to noise, alone or in combination with organic solvents, and the effects of smoking and cholesterol on hearing. Methods: Thresholds at .5 - 6KHz, tobacco history, and cholesterol levels, were recorded for 29 men exposed to noise, 42 with combined exposure, and 40 controls. ANOVA was run to determine difference between groups for either ear, and to consider difference between ears and between groups existed over time for three tests. An ANCOVA judged effect of tobacco use on cholesterol level on hearing. Results: There was no significant difference between groups or effect with tobacco use, or cholesterol levels. Left ear effect was significant at 6Khz. Age was significant at most frequencies and tests. Further studies should include controls for solvent exposure, a larger sample, and be prospective in nature. This study suggests the need for stricter regulation of hearing management programs.
