There has been tremendous research in smart pixel technologies in the last decade, which allow integration of optics and electronics for mutual functional enhancement. Thus, optics benefit from the processing power of electronics and electronics from the bandwidth and parallelism that can be achieved through optics. This research is part of a bigger project the CASPR: “Configurable Architecture for Smart Pixel Research”. CASPR is a generically programmable array of single bit RISC processors. Being programmable, allows one to tackle the expensive ASIC based solutions prevalent in smart pixel technologies. This research focuses on design of the control path of the processing elements, photo-receiver, and associated circuitry such as, global line implementation, 16:1 storage register decoder, 8:1 routing multiplexer and bi-directional shift register for testing and validation.
