STORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AS A PROFESSIONAL SERVICE OCCUPATION

Abstract Details

2003, MS ARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning: Architecture (Master of).
This thesis concerns the images of architectural services and of architecture as a profession. The concerns focus on how these two aspects have undergone changes over the past two decades as responses to changing circumstances in society and in the economy. The aim is in the hope to understand the consequences of these responses and the subsequent opportunities for the profession to learn from these consequences in order to improve its value both economically and intellectually. Regarding architectural service, the thesis explores the situations and the changes both external and internal to the building industry which have had strong impacts on the work of architects. The thesis also summarizes background on the project delivery system, on characteristics of several forms of service companies and procedures to procure building projects. Regarding architecture as a profession, the thesis explores the role of the profession in the building industry, architects' responsibilities and their relationship with allied disciplines, with patrons and clients, and with the public, in its efforts to regain its value in the new circumstances. The thesis projects these concepts across a specific period of time: from the middle to late 1980's as compared with the middle 90's, with primary focus on the American situation. By exploring these changes and their causes in architectural services, the thesis depicts responsive approaches architects have adopted in the past two decades in the effort to maintain their role, regain their value, establish new relationships with associated disciplines and rebuild trust with clients and the public in society. By analyzing these approaches and their influences on the profession, the thesis seeks to illustrate realistically the professional images that exist in the practical world. Such a reflection on the contemporary situation can enable people who are going to enter this profession to create more appropriate and adaptive career approaches with the aim of redefining the profession and reinforcing its value in the new circumstances.
