Abstract
Researches in the recent years have shown great improvement in the performance of network systems. High-speed, low-latency networks can achieve a high transfer rate at a low cost. This has lead to the popularity of Distributed systems built using low-cost PCs and high speed, scalable net-works. However, there lays a wide gap between the disk storage speed and the processor/memory speed which slows down the performance of the system. Efficient techniques have been developed to bridge this gap and improve the performance. Cooperative caching is one of the techniques em-ployed to improve the performance of a distributed system. Cooperative caching uses a small part of the cache memory of each client to form global cache which is used to cache the data blocks. This avoids unnecessary accesses to the disk, thus speeding up the read performance. The write performance issues are not handled by Cooperative caching. Use of a write-through cache for reliability slows down the write performance of the system. We propose a novel, reliable Cooperative Caching architecture, Distributed Efficient and Re-liable Cooperative Cache (DEFER Cache), which aims at improving the write performance. It extends the idea of cooperative caching to write operations. It combines duplication with logging to enhance the write performance and also provided increased reliability and data availability.
