Abstract Details

2003, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering : Mechanical Engineering.
The objective of this thesis is to develop a nanocomposite material that can improve the elastic properties of traditional composite materials by adding small amounts of carbon nanotubes to polymers. Adding CNTs to the matrix is expected to improve the stiffness, toughness, electrical conductivity, interlaminar shear strength of and many other properties of composites. A balanced research approach was taken to develop the nanocomposite material that involved nanotube functionalization using a surfactant method, a no solvent method, and a plasma coating method, dispersion of the nanotubes in the resin using mechanical mixing and ultra-sonication, composite fabrication, elasticmodeling, and characterization using mechanical and microscopy techniques. Different methods of processing and different types of nanotubes were used to make the nanocomposite material. The main results of the thesis work include improving the elastic properties and electrical conductivity of polymers by the addition of 1 wt % of carbon nanotubes. Additionally, problems in processing are identified and approaches are proposed to improve the repeatability of the processing and the elastic properties of the material, particularly at higher percent loadings of nanotubes. Some application ideas are also given in which multifunctional smart materials are proposed.
