Bluetooth is a short-range radio communication technology for wireless personal area networks. A Bluetooth network is organized as a collection of sub-networks called scatternets, each of which in turn is a collection of piconets interconnected by common nodes called bridge nodes. Every piconet has a master-slave configuration and the master arbitrates channel access between slaves by using an intra-piconet scheduling algorithm. Several intra-piconet scheduling algorithms have been proposed in the literature but all are designed for single piconets, and may not perform well when multiple piconets are interconnected in a scatternet. However, with increasing use of Bluetooth, it is envisaged that such scatternets will soon be common requiring appropriate protocol support. In this thesis we study the performance aspects of intra-piconet schedulers for scatternets. Specifically, we develop a new priority-based scheduling technique called Bridge Priority (BrP) that can be used in conjunction with any piconet-based intra-piconet schedulers proposed so far. BrP uses the availability information of the slave nodes in the current piconet – their presence and absence – and compensates the bridge nodes for their periods of absence to provide performance enhancement. We develop a ns-2 based simulator to evaluate the performance of the BrP technique. Our results show that BrP schedules up to 100% of bridge traffic unlike the existing schedulers, which might deliver as low as 37% of the bridge traffic. This drastic increase in the bridge traffic delivery improves the overall performance of Bridge Priority (BrP) as compared to the piconet based intra-piconet schedulers in scatternets. To the best of our knowledge this is the first work to investigate intra-piconet scheduling for scatternets.
