Abstract Details

2004, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering : Computer Engineering.
Without a doubt semiconductor technology is advancing at an amazing pace. While traditional analog and digital circuits remain the primary focus, future applications are likely to rely more and more on the integration of components that operate in nontraditional domains. The Multi-Technology Field Programmable Gate Array (MT-FPGA) project seeks to facilitate future development work involving systems that feature a mixture of traditional VLSI and Multi-Technology VLSI components. Like a traditional FPGA, the MT-FPGA provides a configurable platform with the potential to implement any number of systems. The availability of such a system would mean that it would no longer be necessary for a designer to fabricate a new chip with every project. The development effort for the MT-FPGA can be divided up into several major subcomponents. One required feature of any device in the FPGA family is the presence of a programmable routing framework capable of arbitrarily distributing signals between each of the general purpose functional blocks. This distribution network relies on routing channels and switch blocks. Before fabrication these components were simulated, and finally, attempts were made to fully characterize their performance. Design errors will necessitate a second fabrication before a functional system can be achieved.
