Shape from Shading (SFS) is an ill-posed problem as it tries to solve an under-determined system. As a result it is difficult to obtain an accurate and unique solution. It is tough to result in a good estimate using just one input image. Moreover, the image has to be taken with proper placement of light source so as to illuminate most part of the object. Photometric stereo eases this problem by using more than one image taken from different illuminant directions but viewed from the same camera. In this thesis, we analyze Tsai’s linear SFS and Zhang’s Photometric stereo algorithms and modify Zhang’s algorithm to use with two input images having a large angular separation between the illuminants. Zhang’s algorithm is an extension of Tsai’s SFS algorithm to handle several images. It is a form continuous photometric stereo involving cascading SFS. The angular separation between the illuminants of consecutive images is small and the estimated shape is refined with every new image. We modify this algorithm and use it on just two input images with a large angular separation between the illuminants. The test of the modified algorithm on synthetic images have shown improvements and test on real data have also been conducted with acceptable results.
