Combined sewer overflow (CSO) pollution is a widespread problem throughout the United States. A novel CSO WWTF that consists of primary sedimentation tanks and fine mesh screens was built and is in operation along the Muddy Creek in Cincinnati, OH. In 2003, twelve wet weather events were sampled, and the nutrient concentrations in the influent and effluent of the WWTF were measured. The WWTF exhibited removal efficiencies ranging between 12-83% for Total N, 12- 86% for NH3-N and 75-82.8% for PO43-P when operating as a flow-through treatment process, and 100% efficiency for all containment events. Comparisons between hypothetical first- flush containment and flow-through treatment were made. All nutrient first flush phenomena were studied using M(V). Three factors that may influence the nutrient loads in a wet weather event, including the antecedent dry weather period, the flow duration and the peak flow rate of the, were studied using the multiple regression method.
