Abstract Details

2004, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Engineering : Industrial Engineering.
This research effort investigated the onset of musculoskeletal symptoms in single and multiple body regions among a cohort of 263 nursing personnel employed in three hospitals in the United States. This study provides a multi-faceted approach to assessing these types of outcomes. Initially, prevalence rates for single and multiple body regions were determined in conjunction with the examination of potential significant associations between the onset of symptoms in multiple body areas. An assessment of the significant factors consisting primarily of individual and lifestyle factors was also be completed. Secondly, a comprehensive assessment of all factors influencing musculoskeletal outcomes was investigated to determine whether they can be considered a risk or a protective factor reducing the likelihood and adverse effects of musculoskeletal symptoms. Finally, the associations between subjective health complaints (e.g. chest pain, breathing difficulties, and loss of appetite, and musculoskeletal symptoms) were addressed.
