Abstract
This thesis begins where design generally ends. It seeks sense out of processes that affect every building that has been built or going to be built. These processes are environmental, from inside out/outside in, and are commonly perceived as signs of deterioration. To varying degrees it is inevitable that a building will age, be neglected, or miss a scheduled maintenance. I intend to explore through design the dynamic interrelationship of materials, time, and nature and how we construct with them. Materials and materiality will be examined as a living component of building fabric: as a substance reflecting the presence of man and nature. If the expression, ‘the end is known from the beginning’ holds, can not the inevitable weathering of a building be recognized and made use of in the uncertainties of its manifestation?
