Abstract Details

2004, MA, University of Cincinnati, Allied Health Sciences : Speech-Language Pathology.
Quality of life specifically related to swallowing difficulties has been minimally studied in the head and neck cancer population. This study addressed the potential for factors, such as swallowing pain, coping, and unmet needs, to have an impact on the quality of life in individuals with head and neck cancer. To answer the questions asked by the current study, individuals with head and neck cancer who had received or were currently receiving swallowing treatment completed a survey packet. The survey packet included three surveys that addressed global quality of life, swallowing pain, ways of coping, and unmet needs. The global quality of life responses were compared with the responses for swallowing pain, ways of coping, and unmet needs. The responses for the survey were also divided into smaller subject subsets based on demographic data abstracted from a chart review. A higher level of pain was indicated by subjects with a lower quality of life. Subjects with a higher quality of life were overall more satisfied in terms of needs being met than subjects with a lower quality of life. A majority of subjects in this study reported to more frequently use positive ways of coping despite their global quality of life rating. The trends identified by this study appear to support the need for all medical professionals, especially speech-language pathologists, to be more aware of an individual’s swallowing pain and unmet needs as these factors can have an impact on an individual’s overall quality of life.
