This thesis concerns itself with the modeling of a large voice coil actuator system; the modeling is largely based upon the parametric empirical method, using frequency response function (FRF) data recorded on an actual voice coil actuator. The models were constructed for each of the different parameters that dominate the system response and performance. These parameters were consolidated into a complete linear model that encompasses the total system. The response to the model is check for agreement against the recorded data to ensure a tight fit. Despite the fact that the final model is linear, various non-linear effects are explored and investigated throughout the model development. The non-linearity associated with various parameters as a function of armature extension is also explored. In addition the non-linearity of the complex impedance due to skin-depth effect is also presented. In addition to the final model, the basic operation, applications, and issues associated with voice coil actuators are also presented.
