CHAMBER MUSIC IN EARLY PIANO STUDY: A GUIDE TO REPERTOIRE

ANDERSON, DIANNA

Abstract Details

2004, DMA, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music : Piano.
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a resource from which piano teachers can obtain information about where to find appropriate chamber music literature for students beyond the range of piano duet and two-piano repertoire. The first chapter discusses incorporating chamber music literature into the established piano curriculum and sequencing chamber music repertoire. The second chapter is an annotated list of chamber music for piano and other instruments suitable for use by students. In addition to title, composer, and instrumentation, every entry includes information on the publisher, length, key, level for the piano part, and a brief description of pedagogical features of the piece. Some entries include biographical information about the composer, and list the composition date and level for the other instruments. A full explanation of the grading system used is given in Chapter One. Music in the list includes representative examples of music from historical periods from the Baroque to the twenty-first century, by composers of numerous nationalities, using instrumental combinations of two to six instruments. Except for special cases, compositions included are currently available from publishers. The entries are indexed by composer, level, and instrumentation. An appendix supplies information on publishers.
