The American population is aging at an accelerating rate, due to increasing longevity and the number of ‘baby boomers.’ The health conditions of senior citizens followed by illnesses may cause disabilities that typically refer to the functional limitations. Most elderly people in an industrial society face the problem of how to spend their time in a constructive and fulfilling way. There is lack of place for elderly persons to accommodate their activities related with their functional limitations. Life in the city can be difficult for older people at times due to limited or restricted physical mobility and the likelihood of lower levels of social interaction. Existing public spaces may not adequately accommodate activities related with the physical needs of the elderly. The purpose of this study is defining the concept of public space and how it can address the need of senior citizen. Identifying the literature about aging process and how does it create disability for elderly to conduct their leisure activity opens the gateway through what are the roles of public space fulfilling their needs may be discussed. By examining the need of leisure activity for elderly, the need of public spaces, and elements of successful public space, the role of public space for elderly would be found. Having identified the finding, the final product of this study will be recommendation of public space guidelines that could accommodate elderly needs.
