ANALYSIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PARALLEL MIXED-SIGNAL SYNCHRONIZATION PROTOCOLS

Abstract Details

2005, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering : Computer Engineering.
Mixed-signal systems which are one of the most prevalent types of systems in use today have both digital and analog components which exhibit discrete and continuous-time behavior respectively. For such disparate modules to work in unison an interface governed by “Synchronization Protocols” must be created. These modules can then share information between them. A thorough knowledge of these synchronization protocols would be beneficial in choosing the protocols, setting their parameters, and the choosing the resources necessary for the simulation itself. This research is an attempt to study the performance of two synchronization protocols, viz. First Event Synchronization (FES) and Second Event Synchronization protocols (SES) by Frey et.al., as a function of model composition, executing processes, number of processors, and dynamic activity factor. The results showed that the synchronization performance was not relatively insensitive to any specific factor under all conditions. In general the FES protocol executed faster than SES protocol.
