Abstract Details

2005, MS, University of Cincinnati, Allied Health Sciences : Genetic Counseling.
Objective(s): To evaluate hospice support services received by families whose fetus was diagnosed prenatally with a lethal condition. Study Design: Subjects were women who used the perinatal hospice program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Ten subjects and three controls (women who experienced perinatal loss but did not receive hospice) were interviewed by telephone with questions regarding their demographics, the index pregnancy, their infant, and their level of satisfaction with perinatal care. Results: Subjects were satisfied with perinatal hospice. They especially appreciated the follow up care and the support provided to their husbands, partners, and children. Subjects exhibited slightly healthier emotional coping than controls as measured by the Perinatal Grief Scale (PGS)1,2 and when compared to other studies utilizing the PGS. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary evidence that perinatal hospice is a valuable source of support for families who are coping with the prenatal diagnosis of a lethal disorder.
