Impact of the Word “Counseling” on Likelihood to Schedule an Appointment for Genetic Counseling

Smith, Jenny

Abstract Details

2005, MS, University of Cincinnati, Allied Health Sciences : Genetic Counseling.
While reported interest in genetic testing for cancer risk is high in the general population, many high risk patients referred for genetic services never follow through to schedule an appointment. This study was designed to explore the impact of the terminology used and amount of information provided in a hypothetical referral for genetic counseling services on consumer interest and predicted likelihood to schedule an appointment. Participants (n=344) completed a self-administered questionnaire indicating the predicted likelihood that they would schedule and attend a genetics appointment, following a hypothetical scenario and referral. The terminology used in the referral for genetic services (“counseling” vs. “risk assessment”) (p=0.7) and receiving an explanation of the genetic counseling process (p=0.17) did not affect intent to schedule. The word “counseling” and lack of an explanation of the process do not appear to negatively impact interest in genetic services.
