COLOR AND SPACE IN ARCHITECTURE

LUEHMANN, NORA

Abstract Details

2006, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
This thesis will discuss the use of color in architecture. Color is an integral part of our perception of the environment. However, architectural design mostly concerns itself with just form. This thesis will argue that light, form, and color are equal tools available to the architect in shaping our perception of the built world. Color is not seen as a form generator, but as a separate design element that stands in a dialogue with light and form. The study of color in relation to three-dimensional perception is founded on the principles of color reference systems, color harmonies and contrasts, light, vision, perception, human color reactions, gestalt principles, and perception of spatial depth. These topics will be analyzed to create principles that will be applicable to the architectural design process. As a result, this thesis will better the understanding of the relationship of color and form and their use in architecture.
