Multi-Authorial Design for an Assisted Living Center

Abstract Details

2006, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
From the Radiant City to the suburban subdivision, unilaterally designed architecture disregards the different needs, desires, and circumstances of the people who use and modify a building. As a situationally specific alternative, this thesis proposes a practice by which both architects and inhabitants modify environments as needs arise. The conjecture is that a practice of adaptive reuse at the systemic scale and the use of an adaptive kit of parts at the local scale will expose the situations of its authors at multiple scales of space and history. This exploration analyzes the situational works of Guy Debord, Bernard Tschumi, and the Dutch artist Constant. From this, a method of multi-authorial design will be created for an elderly assisted living center near Cincinnati. By performing the act of authorship as a single intervention, each individual might be empowered to employ taste and situational judgment, unimpeded by the exclusion of total design.
