RAISED PLANE: AN URBAN ROOFTOP VILLAGE

HARDEN II, TERRY LEE

Abstract Details

2006, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
The high building density of large metropolises in the United States severely limits the amount of new architecture. One strategy to eliminate this predicament is the idea of rooftop architecture: the practice of building on top of, or through, an existing roof of a building. Rooftop architecture can become an alternative option to ground-up architecture for architects, clients, and users. The thesis topic of a "rooftop village" will explore the idea of building on rooftops with multiple structures situated over several rooftops. The project consists of predominantly housing, but also includes areas for recreation, shops, restaurant and café, and studio/office space for some businesses, all situated on top of a several blocks of existing buildings. A creative and unique complex of buildings resulted from this thesis project.
