Contemporary Preservation: Connecting to Historical Perspectives in Combined Works of Architecture

Abstract Details

2006, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning : Architecture (Master of).
Every year, an increasing number of architectural commissions involve the modification of existing buildings. For a variety of reasons, buildings always have, and always will require modifications. Of particular interest are projects that involve the modification of historic structures as these projects involve special social, architectural and legal considerations. Integrating historic buildings into works of contemporary architecture first requires a thorough understanding of the values of the existing building. Next, there must be a treatment strategy for the existing building that considers both the materials and the social image of the building. Connections across scales, values, and time create a symbiotic relationship that reinforces the importance of the existing structure and provides a strong foundation for the contemporary adaptations. This type of design is truly the apex of historic preservation; capitalizing on the critical perspectives of the past to ensure that we proceed knowledgeably into our future.
